Caregiving

Information sourced from genworth financial

Now that H and I are married, we get to deal with a whole bunch of stuff that one would describe as less than fun.  She has to jump through all of the name changing hoops, we then can sit down and talk about options for a whole bunch of uncomfortable stuff, like life insurance and wills, and a whole bunch of stuff that’s less than exciting, like retirement plans.

One of the things we of course have to worry about is our extended family and how they will be cared for when they are unable to care for themselves.  It’s a sad situation, but unfortunately one that everyone has to deal with as no one has family members that will be forever young.  If you’re curious about it, here’s a good overview of 4 basic kinds of care providers.  There are plenty of options out there, so make sure you do your research and talk with the person that may need care before they need it.  No one wants to be left wondering if they made the right choice for a loved one.

If you’re curious, there’s  good article on caring for aging parents on NPR.  It’ll be uncomfortable to talk and think about, but it should be done.

Sorry for the short post today, im finally back home and I am beat.

  1. Welcome back! I am interested to hear about some of the challenges up front after a wedding and look forward to reading about your experiences.

  2. Welcome back!
As for caregiving for family members, this is a topic that cannot be discussed once and considered dealt with. As your circumstances change, what seemed like a good idea when you were first married may become a very bad idea.
As someone who had her MIL live with her for 16 months, and managed her finances until she passed, let me tell you it’s important for you and your spouse to be on board with decisions, and to keep talking about it.
