Weekly Links: Waiting for Superman Edition

Last night, Waiting for Superman finally came to town.  It was here for only 3 nights, so I went to the theater with my roommate and we grabbed a seat.  (It was also free, and I’m not sure why, although I heard some rumors as to who paid for it).  It was an interesting movie, to say the least.  I thought that the premise was basically true, but that it was placing a lot of blame on the teachers – who in my opinion don’t deserve it.  They work hard just like everyone else.

Jonathan at Cents to Share talks about buying a home.  Sounds to me like he got a pretty good deal: 1.5 acres, an older house (usually have more character) and for under 100k.   Nice work!

April at Get Rich Slowly has some Frugal Valentines Date Ideas.  There’s no need to break the bank on this one, guys (or gals).  There’s plenty that you can do with your favorite person for free or very, very close to it.  Just spend some time thinking about what they enjoy the most, then go do that.  Usually it’s something much more simple than the commercials about roses, luxurious dinners, and limo rides would have you believe.

Sam over at Financial Samurai has a great post about good resumes.  The economy is heating up and jumping to a new job is most likely going to get easier.  If you’re looking to upgrade your position or get into a new line of work, polish that resume.

The second round of the yakezie writing contest has begun, and it’s off with a bang.  Here are the essays that are up so far.  You can vote for your favorite, but you have to register for the site first.

  1. Thanks for including my post Jeff. I think I’d enjoy watching Waiting For Superman, since I like documentaries. I’d have to agree with you that the blame for youth problems doesn’t necessarily fall on teachers. Personally, I think more falls on parents and lack of discipline. It’s sad when some states even make it illegal for parents to spank their kids. There’s a reason why kids and teens act the way they do now. They don’t fear authority, which stems from no fear of parents.
