What’s made you feel the worst?

by Jeff on August 27, 2010

Today, I decided that I was going to do something different today.

I noticed that when I eat specific things, I have a tendency to feel like absolute crap afterwords for an hour or two.  This happens when I eat too much pizza or something like that.  You know the feeling, where it sits in your stomach like a brick and you dont want to move or do anything at all for an hour or so.

I want to hear from you about what things you’ve done that have made you feel the best when you’re waking  up, going to bed or just generally ambling around during your daily routine.

  1. What foods do you eat that make you feel awful immediately or soon after you eat them?
  2. What foods make you feel great after you eat them?
  3. How have you tried to fix the problem of feeling like theres a rock in your stomach?

Oh, yay! I love posts that generate discussion, and this is something I’ve been dealing with for the last few months!

1. Too much pizza, tacos, chili… Basically, the things I used to eat the most of! And usually anything from a restaurant.
2. Salads. I’ve started preparing salads at home, and they’re not only delicious, I feel GREAT for hours after eating them.
3. I eat less of the things that make me feel bad. If eating four pieces of pizza makes me want to die, I’ll eat two instead and feel alright. I also eat MORE salads.

I just thought of something else to add to number 3! I drink more water. In fact, water is almost all I drink. Back when I drank soda with every meal, I would be miserable afterwards, no matter how little I ate. Now that I drink water with everything I’ve noticed a big difference in how my stomach feels afterward.

I definately agree with that. Earlier this week I ate about 1/2 of a pizza and didnt feel all that great. Still struggled through my time at the gym though.
Salads are also great because they make you feel so much better. It’s -probably all that green stuff in them.

This is exactly why I eat high raw vegan 70% or more a day. Veggie roles, soups, smoothies, green juice, fruit, salads, tea, crudités, cashew cream, muesli, zucchini hummus, etc… All fabulously delicious and leaves me with tons of energy. I don’t even sleep as much as I used to. Yet, I feel better than ever!

Candy, burritos, pizza, and too much pasta all make me feel completely awful.

Oatmeal with two tablespoons of chia seeds, almond butter, agave nectar, and blueberries makes me feel amazing for the entire day and keeps me full enough to make smart choices with lunch and dinner.

When I discovered I had insulin resistance, I gradually cut out all refined carbs from my diet and only eat whole grains, no sugar, etc.

I felt amazingly better and stopped having moodswings entirely (unless I binged).

Turns out I wasn’t just insulin resistant, but I was also hypoglycemic. If pizza makes you feel like crap after a while, try whole grain. I also have a friend who had an undiagnosed gluten intolerance (not allergy– they can test for gluten allergies). When she eliminated gluten from her diet she felt better and she stopped having stomach problems entirely.
