My Life List

by Jeff on August 18, 2010

Earlier this week, J Money at Budgets are Sexy posted what he called his “Life List“.  It simply included things that he  would like to do if he had a bunch of spare cash laying around.  I thought this was a good idea, and I’ve decided that  I’d get one created as well.  ( I also decided that since I couldn’t find a good picture, I’d swipe his artwork.)  Without  further ado, Here it is.

  1. Work for Myself – This is something that I’m constantly attempting to find ways to do.  Currently, my monthly expenses are too high and my cash reserves are too low to think about doing something like this.  What I need is a better bootstrapping mindset to get myself started as quickly as possible.  This could include anything, as well.  Producing something would be awesome.
  2. Teach people something – I’m not too sure what I would teach or to whom, but having spare cash lying around could allow me to  get something really, really interesting going.
  3. National Parks Vacation - There are 2 National Parks in Wyoming, both of which are amazing and worth the trip (Tetons and Yellowstone).  I’ve already seen these, so I’d take my national parks vacation to Alaska!  Many of these parks are difficult to get to (including a personal aspiration of mine, Gates of the Arctic).  I’d like to see every park and preserve in the state (Wrangell-St. Elias, Glacier Bay, Katmai, Yukon-Charley Rivers, Klondike Gold Rush Historic Park, Kenai Fjords, Aniakchak, Lake Clark, Denali, Bering Land Bridge, Kobuk Valley and Noatak) That’s 13 parks/preserves in the state, and because of the roads in the state, it’s easiest to fly (and sometimes the only way).  It would be an expensive trip, but surely unforgettable.
  4. Make a Large Charitable Donation – This is something I’ve always wanted to do, but have no idea how to go about it.  Maybe create and endow a scholarship or something, or just make a donation to the local animal shelter.
  5. Visit all 50 states – Something I’ve always wanted to do.  Currently, I’m at32.  My major empty spot is the South.
  6. Go to a restaurant and leave a very large tip/Pay for someone else in the establishment’s meal – I think it would be fun to tell the waiter/waitress that I’d like to pick up  someone else’s check (but not  let them know it was me) and leave them a large tip on top of that.
  7. Climb a ridiculously tall mountain on another continent – This just sounds like it would be a ton of fun.
  8. Visit Places –  Currently on the list: Detroit, Brazil, Moscow/St. Petersburg, Maine, Alaska, Iceland, Greenland

These are the things that I’d do if I had some money to blow….What would you do?

Okay, now you’ve inspired me to create my own life list! ;) I used to have a list of “things to do before I die” that seriously was pages long. I don’t know if I can narrow it all down to 10 things!

May I recommend that you visit Tennessee ASAP? I can’t recommend Memphis because of its crime rate, but their ribs and atmosphere are really great downtown. Plus, Elvis lived there! Nashville has its country music history. I’ve never visited Chattanooga (gotta do that!), and I don’t think Knoxville (where I live) has all that much going for it for vacationers. But the Great Smoky Mountain National Park is wonderful. If there was one place in Tennessee I’d call “unmissable,” it the GSM park. There are so many gorgeous water falls, hiking trails. And you can visit Dollywood while you’re there. :)

There wasnt a 10-thing minimum for my list, it just happened to stop near that point. Number 3 (the Alaska parks) will most likely take more than one trip, or I’d have to quit my job and save a boatload of cash for that. I wouldn’t really consider spending less than a week in each part (except the historical parks) so this would take a significant amount of time.

Along with your 50 states one, I’d like to go to every continent, including Antarctica.

@ Jenna – I agree, the continents would be a great time. Its hard to get to antartica from what I understand, you pretty much need to be a researcher or military

They have cruises that go there now. Pretty expensive, but for a life dream, I think it’s worth it.

I was really surprised to see Detroit on your list. But if you ever find yourself coming this way, you can couch surf at my house and save a few bucks!

@ Jenna – That sounds like a great idea to take a cruise down there

@ Ellen – Thanks. No one really knows why I want to go to detroit because they think it’s a hell hole, but it sounds awesome to me!
